Why I Like St. Peter

St. Peter wasn't afraid to step out and be challenged - this is why in spite of his weakness the Lord made him a great Apostle. Too many people strive to get comfortable and never grow in faith because of their fear of failure. A faithful disciple learns to trust in the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ and becomes aware that the Lord will always work with us if we're willing to step out of the boat.

Do You Believe?

Reflections from this homily include:

1. The experience of death and the need to console one another.

2. The central importance of personal faith especially when celebrating the Sacraments and how we often find it difficult to "go for the jugular" and challenge people like Jesus did asking Martha point blank, "do you believe this?" We often just assume people believe so they are allowed to go through the Sacraments and through life without being challenged about the importance of faith.

3. The call to experience "little resurrections" in our lives by allowing the Holy Spirit to enlighten and enliven our daily experiences, especially our thinking which can develop into tombs where we easily lose our perspective.

Facing The Desert

The Desert is a place to:

1. Confront things that distract us from God (the world, the flesh, the devil)
2. A place of intense prayer (which prevents us from suffocating with our own problems...prayer unites us to God and helps us be united to one another)
3. A place of sacrifice (the willingness to go without so we can go with God)

Lent - A Time Of Grace

Lent provides a great opportunity to further strive to reach our full "stature" in Christ by examining ourselves and the constant call to experience deeper conversion of mind and heart.

The Church invites us to look at three areas of our lives:

1. Prayer - finding more time for prayer
2. Fasting - asking ourselves if the Holy Spirit is in control of all areas of our lives. What owns me? Food, Entertainment, etc. What is interfering with my ability to love God and neighbor?
3. Almsgiving - sharing of our own resources not out of a desire to recognized but out of a desire to be generous and guided by the Holy Spirit. Christians should live simply...that others may simply live.

If Jesus Is Really Lord Of Our Lives.... Homily For Christ The King 2007

1. We will seek to share the gift of salvation with others and not be exclusive. God will that all people come to a saving knowledge of the truth (! Tim 2: 32-4) This especially means imitating the example of Jesus who when he hung on the cross offered salvation to the thief.
2. Be willing to suffer for a greater good and not gravitate to instant gratification.
3. Be reconciled with people in our lives and live at peace.
4. Celebrate The Eucharist faithfully and joyfully.

Securing Hope Through Perseverance

"Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.
Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace.
In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones and also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must. So that you also may have news of me and of what I am doing, Tychicus, my beloved brother and trustworthy minister in the Lord, will tell you everything. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us and that he may encourage your hearts. Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in immortality."
Ephesians 6:10-24

Being A More Fruitful Christian

Steps to Being More Fruitful

1. Deal with your own issues (Jesus warns us in the Gospel not to dwell on other people's sinfulness but to be open to the grace of repentance ourselves)
2. Surrendering the desire to control and yielding to the Holy Spirit (Avoid Starbucks Catholicism)
3. Foster an attitude of gratitude and look around to see how others are living. We are so blessed as a country but often fall into grumbling.

Journey Into The Desert - Confronting Ourselves

We must learn to enter the desert and to confront the reality of sin so as to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from within. Many people never grow spiritually because they're worried about cosmetic fixes (botox injections) and appearances and not open-heart surgery. A radical trust in God and the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit is needed for this transformation. As this transformation takes place we are free to serve God more effectively. We are freed from sin so we can live in freedom by the law of the Holy Spirit.

A Spiritual Check-Up

We must learn to put our trust in God and ensure that we're taking in good spiritual things so that we can learn to shoulder the disappointment of human failure and learn to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.

In this message I share what a great gift the Liturgy of the Hours is and how it can help us stay focused and spiritually healthy.
